“Money” is the first single to be released by New York indie pop rockers The Drums off their new album “Portamento”.
The song is a hybrid, a mix of sounds by bands like The Smiths and The Strokes, and an almost exact copy of The Joy Division’s style. “Money” is very basic, but that level of simplicity is what makes it shine. When listening to the song you don’t struggle to hear it due to lots of other things happening at once, all you hear is a good, if highly unoriginal song.
Its simple grooves and droning vocals work well together in this well-used musical formula, but unfortunately The Drums have brought very little to this song that couldn’t already be found elsewhere.
Verdict? In a lot of bands the drummer is in the background as the unnoticed member of the band. True to their name this band will probably be unnoticed too.
